Active content
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is known for its use in traditional Chinese medicine. In the past it was used to treat colds, diarrhoea, fatigue, and loss of appetite. The root of this plant contains polysaccharides, flavonoids, isoflavones, triterpene saponins, choline, betaine, and kumatakenin.
The main effects of Astragalus (Chinese Tragacanth):
1. Adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory: it increases resistance to infections. The saponins in astragalus have been shown to protect against sepsis by suppressing inflammation. Astragalus reduces tissue damage such as tissue oedema, including pulmonary oedema, by attenuating inflammatory factors.
2. Antiviral effect: it prevents viral infections including colds, respiratory tract infections, and infectious liver diseases (infectious hepatitis).
3. Astragalus root has been proven to support the immune system. Regarding patients with tumour process, astragalus increases resistance to infections.
4. Antineoplastic effect (against tumours): it is used to induce apoptosis (natural programmed death of cancer cells). It alleviates the side effects of chemotherapy (nausea, vomiting and diarrhea). Astragalus is very effective during the first week of treatment.
5. Cardiotonic and vasodilator: it improves heart function and reduces the severity of symptoms in heart disease. Astragalus dilates blood vessels and increases the amount of blood pumped from the heart.
6. In type II diabetes, it lowers blood sugar levels and keeps them under control. Adding Astragalus to meals for people with type II diabetes helps control blood sugar levels after a fast period as well as after a meal with daily use of this product for four months.
7. It reduces body weight by improving carbohydrate metabolism.
8. It protects the health of and regulates kidney functions. It regulates protein levels (proteinuria) in the urine, various levels of protein are a sign of kidney damage or dysfunction. Astragalus has been shown to prevent the risk of infection and inflammation when taken daily for three to six months in people with reduced kidney function.
9. It reduces manifestations of chronic fatigue syndrome.
10. Anti-allergic effects: relieves the symptoms of seasonal allergies such as sneezing, and runny nose.
11. Geroprotective effect: astragalus’ ability to stop cellular aging and slow telomere shortening has been proven. Telomeres are protective caps on chromosomes that thin with age and are a sign of cellular aging. Dr. Bill Edwards discovered the enzyme telomerase in his cells and watched it restore these telomeres in a way that passed on age-related information to future generations. Astragalus slows and reverses telomere shortening, restoring and improving cellular function.
